Scotland's Highlands and North Coast

We drove around the other side of Sandside Bay to find out more about the Dounreay facility. This was Britain's centre for fast reactor research, seen as the future of electricity production, from 1954 to 1994. Changes to technology and uranium supply meant this was no longer viable. It is being decommissioned and there are information boards hoping to alleviate people's concerns. When I read that historically waste was released into the ocean and particles are still washing up on beaches, it didn't help me much! Dismantling a nuclear reactor facility and disposing of it safely is pretty scary stuff.
